Birds have acquired importance since the mans existence. The earliest Hindu mythology states about twenty birds in rig Veda. And later Veda describes to more than 250 birds. There are many interesting stories that have made their religious importance as well.

Birds have started appearing on stamps by the year 1845 in Switzerland with Basel Dove. Stamp issued by Japan on birds was in the year 1875 that sustains the most stylish illustrations and was probably of the bean goose, a goshawk and a pied wagtail. This trend was then followed by Columbia that issued stamps on Andean condor, while it was further continued by Guatemala in the year 1879 with resplendent quetzal.
Most of the countries have started producing bird stamps in the year 1920 and 1930 but Britain had no bird stamp till 1963. But most of its colonies started much before than Britain like Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika together issued stamps on birds in the year 1935.Britain first stamps on birds were with long tailed tit, which was followed by badger and roe deer fawn and some flower all were on the same stamp.
