Postal stamp was first introduced on 1 may 1840 at the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In India; it was introduced on 1852 at Sindh and the name of the stamp was “Scinde Dawk”. India got independent in 1947 and after that India released three new stamps. First one was introduced on 21st November and it was imprinted with National Flag. Other two were Modern Aircraft and Ashoka Capital which was introduced on 15th December 1947.
First Day Cover of Indian stamp started with Indian independency. After releasing three stamps; the Indian state company Air India started first international flight from India to UK On 8th June 1948. For remembrance to this great occasion; India released that day Modern Air Craft stamps. This stamp was used only a day.
At the first Indian anniversary; India released four Gandhi stamps. These stamps were printed in Switzerland. In July 1950, Archeological series of stamps were introduced. These stamps were presenting Bodhisattva. In Year 1951; Delhi was host for the first Asian Games. Indian postage released two stamps for this occasion on 4th March 1951. On 29th may 1953; Sir. Edmond Hillary and Densing Norge won the Mount Everest by climbing the top of the Mount Everest. India imprinted this great occasion on their stamp and issued two new stamps on 2nd October 1953.
On the occasion of, century of Indian Mutiny; on 15 august 1957; India released two new stamps. First Day covers of Indian stamps; India issued three new stamps on 14th October 1957 to celebrate the India’s First Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s Birthday as National Children’s Day. Another stamp was released on UNICEF with the image of Children on 11th December 1960. On the eve of National Maritime Day; Indian postage released a stamp with the figure of ship jalashua docked on 5th April 1965. After travelling many phases of evolution ,India release 3 Very new stamps on 5 June 2010. These stamps were dedicated to International Year of Biodiversity.
